What is Cinco de Mayo?
A) Mexican Independence Day
B) National Tequila Drinking Day
C) None of the above
If you chose answer C, good job. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s triumph over the French army during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Too often, it’s confused with Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls in September. In recent years, Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger celebration in the United States than in Mexico, often associated with Mexican food, beverages and unfortunately, stereotypes. So how do we celebrate May 5 without turning a cultural day of observance into a full-blown fiesta? Third-generation Mexican-American Raul A. Reyes says it’s okay to have fun as long as we leave our sombreros, fake mustaches and ponchos behind.
