My Incredible CrossFit Training Session with Megan P.

I experienced my first one-on-one crossfit training session with our amazing instructor Megan P. at CrossFit Central in downtown Austin this morning. I honestly don’t think I have enough words to properly praise her.

I love working out, can barely go a day without it, and pride myself with knowing a little bit about fitness. If you’ve read any of my former blog posts, you’d know that I played field hockey and tennis in college. After tearing my ACL my freshman year of high school, I learned Olympic lifting in the hopes of never having to go through injury hell ever again. I kept up this gym regime throughout college, and it helped me stay strong and be injury free throughout my entire my entire 4 years there.

With all this being said, I still found myself incredibly nervous in the hours leading up to my session this morning. My only experience with crossfit prior to this morning involved watching the crazy-intense CrossFit Games on tv. I am in awe of those girls whose pinkies can probably pick up more weight than my chicken arms could ever dream of. Was I going to make a fool out of myself, even with my fitness background?

I looked Megan up on the day before to get a sense of what I had signed up for. She received her BS in Exercise Physiology/Health Promotion at Baylor before going on to get her Masters in Exercise Physiology at Texas Tech. She grew up in a sports loving family, playing multiple herself,  and she has held tight to this passion of athletics and fitness throughout her life. It also doesn’t hurt that she is certified in basically every fitness training that you could imagine. As well as being a personal trainer, she manages the Relentless Bootcamps all over town. Before having ever met her, I knew Megan was a bonafide badass (one of the highest compliments in my book).

I parked my car in the CrossFit Central Downtown parking lot, gave myself a quick pep talk and finally got out of my car. After checking every other room of the facility, I was finally guided to the gym that Megan had accurately described in her email. During our first hellos, I immediately felt relaxed. Megan knows her way around a gym, while also exuding comforting vibes. She can just as easily talk to you about the awful downtown traffic that we both experience in the afternoon as well as how each exercise that I’m doing will benefit me. She is a perfect blend of toughness and sweetness. She wants to make you the best that you can be, and she really isn’t interested in listening to unjustified excuses. She will make you work hard and sweat, but she will make sure that you have a smile on your face the entire time. In the wise words of 13 year-old Ron Weasley, “you’re going to suffer, but you’re going to be happy about it.”

We started the session off with a little bit of rolling. While I’ve been told the advantages of rolling out your muscles many times, I’ve never jumped on the bandwagon as I should. Megan guided me through rolling out my back, shoulders, and calves. As someone who runs everyday, my calves delighted in this short massage that comes way too infrequently. Next, I rowed on the erg machine for 500 yards to start warming up every part of my body. Then, the real work began. I did sets of bodyweight and weighted squats, kettlebell swings, push-ups, band work,and more. The session ended with Megan timing me to complete three sets of 1 400 yard run, 21 sit-ups, 15 kettlebell squats, and 9 squat medicine ball throws, of which I completed in about 10 minutes. While I am unsure how my timing stands up to others, Megan gave me words of encouragement throughout the entire thing. While she focused on my form and corrected me when necessary, she was not a robot and talked with me throughout the entire hour when possible. I got a great workout in while also feeling like I was more than just her client for the hour.

After meeting Megan and spending an hour with her, she turned out to be just as much of a badass as I thought, if not more, but she offers more than just fitness knowledge and an incredible dedication to a healthy lifestyle. She is there for you every step of the way, no matter what your fitness goals are, and is both your instructor and mentor as well as your friend as you journey through your highs and lows toward an awesome you!
